Feedback: what it is, how to do it and how to make it a powerful growth tool

The high performance of a team can be within the reach of a conversation. Although it may seem simple, however, feedback needs to follow some guidelines so that it does not create problems, but rather benefits people.

What is feedback

Feedback é oportunidade de crescimento. Isso mesmo que você leu. Apesar de muitos acabarem saindo de forma enviesada, um feedback precisa construir, ao invés de destruir.

And everything is in communication.

In other words, knowing that it involves intention, behavior and how all of this reaches the other. This is why, eventually, it can be seen as a problem and not a solution.

However, feedback is a solution. Although they may contain some judgment, they should not be focused on that. Quite the contrary, feedback is based on real examples. That is, facts and data.

In general, feedback is a tool for professional and personal growth. And it is exactly for this reason that you must follow some guidelines.

See, poorly done feedback can generate more than an environment full of hurt and arguments. Bad feedback can become a trigger for the loss of talent in a company.

And, of course, we don't want that!

If we can improve people's performance with a conversation, why make it worse?

Feedback that works

Feedback that works is one that brings about a frank, open and transparent conversation. It's not about judgement, it's about construction.

Also, when receiving or providing feedback, keep the event in mind. For example, if the event on which the feedback will be based happened a long time ago, there is no need to bring it up. Don't let facts be doomed to time and oblivion.

Furthermore, it is important to bring CNV (Non-Violent Communication) into this conversation. In general, this type of communication reduces the chances of judgments based on negative opinions and increases the assertiveness of intentions, behaviors and how all of this reaches the other person.

CNV is an excellent support tool for conversations with clarity and objective. Therefore, it can be used very well in feedback.

Feedback is supposed to be helpful

Feedback needs to have a goal. It's supposed to be useful. And here it is worth remembering and highlighting your objective: it is a conversation with potential leverage for growth, both professional and personal.

So, look for opportunities for improvement and/or praise. Anyway, it's not all negative. On the contrary, it brings a very positive charge to the table.

Competent and motivated people continually receive and provide feedback.

There is no magic in this. They just understand about communication and people. In short, helpful feedback is a powerful item of inspiration.

Communication and feedback

Communicating with inspiration is, indeed, a challenge. Therefore, receiving or providing feedback would be no different.

The trick, then, is building trusting relationships, in addition to studying every point and detail of the most diverse means and ways of communicating.
