I always found it strange and curious to think that communication is what made us go further. It showed our best and our worst, throughout time. Through it, we move crowds. We conquer people, positions, posts and much more.
We can communicate to go further. Just as we can communicate for other purposes.
And communication is not necessarily in words. Communication involves gestures, transmission, the way it reaches the other person. There are so many layers and nuances that it's very easy to get lost along the way.
So, how to communicate assertively? And how does this have to do with performance?
It seems like more of the same, such an obvious question. I know that many people know the importance of communicating well, transparently, openly and honestly.
However, it is essential to take a step back to review this importance.
Communication is not about verbalization. Although it can be part of the communicative process, it is not even mandatory. How many nonverbal people do you know who communicate? It may be in a different way, but they do, in fact, communicate.
And do you know why? Because communication goes much, much further than verbalization.
It has to do with content, behavior, transmission, return.
People who communicate well are not those who speak difficult words, for example, to show their level of education to others. People who communicate well understand their audience, understand behavior, psychology and good ways to convey what they want to be conveyed.
In other words, it is a complex process, which we, human beings, master. However, it is not a gift. It is method and practice. So calm down! If you think you don't communicate well, you can be sure that with the right training this will change!
Furthermore, assertive communication can move an entire team towards collective results. Move mountains. It consolidates brand, positioning and values.
According to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Business Communication, one of the biggest corporate governance risks is, precisely, the lack of communication and clarity (59%).
Still according to the research, companies and communities believe that a strong image and culture can only be built with assertive, honest and transparent communication.
That is, in short, it’s all about positioning. And the construction of this positioning lies in communication.
In organizations, communication is now seen as a golden skill.
Essential for leaders and employees - although not considered a mandatory skill for everyone - effective communication is one of the popular soft skills.
The issue is that, while many companies ask for this, not all are open and willing to actually develop it.
Communication involves investment and training. Because, as I mentioned before, it is not a gift, it is a method and practice.
It does not stop there! In organizations - and outside them -, where interpersonal relationships and teamwork are fundamental to success, it is not possible to communicate assertively alone. We need to communicate with connection.
And connecting with others is no simple task. We are different, with different opinions and behaviors. In everyday life, moreover, there may be non-productive conflicts, and that's part of it!
However, it is necessary to keep in mind that, if the objective is to achieve the result, people do not need to speak the same language. But they need to communicate effectively and with connection, so that the conflicts that arise are productive.
Communicating with connection builds trust. And trust is the basis for relationships to be transparent and honest. As a consequence, high performance occurs.
