3 trends for teamwork in 2024

The new year has arrived and the future is not tomorrow. Is today!

According to the most recent report from the World Economic Forum, the “Future of Jobs”, the corporate world is moving quickly towards the development of skills that are not technical.

But then, what would they be? Soft Skills or Human Skills. These skills are associated with human behavior, and will permeate the priority for the future.

And it's a not too distant future. According to the report, in just five years the world will begin to demand such skills as adaptation and flexibility, especially from team leaders.

Human Skills or Soft Skills

The list is vast and not so simple to put into practice. In fact, it is necessary trainings, side dishes and some habit changes.

On the other hand, all skills are possible to be developed, for everyone. Among the main ones, we have:

  • Emotional intelligence;
  • Effective communication;
  • Creativity;
  • Team work;
  • Conflict resolution;
  • Flexibility, organization and time management;
  • Resilience;
  • Humanized leadership;
  • Positive attitude;
  • Responsibility and commitment.

Have you ever imagined a resume like this? I think probably yes. However, we still highlight technical skills as the main guides for the job market.

Now, if we think about turnover and retention of people - and people as the biggest competitive advantage of companies -, we will see that, in fact, we need to reflect a lot on new ways to achieve collective goals and results.

After all, that's what an organization lives by, isn't it?!

For a long time, we prioritized machines and techniques. And, despite the great gains, we lost a little as humanity.

We seem to have forgotten how to be human. Fortunately, we still are. We just need this rescue.

And on this path of development of Human Skills, we come across the basis for change: self-knowledge - which ends up being another trend for the coming year.

Self-knowledge

If we don't know ourselves - and I say this in depth, considering our strengths and vulnerabilities - we won't be able to bring out the best in ourselves.

Knowing the techniques is always good. However, knowing where our callus is that holds us and where we can fly is even better! This way, we are able to communicate, relate and connect better with people and the environment.

Relationship, connection, communication and collaboration, after all, are the pillars for true teamwork.

Communication and compassionate leadership

Less judgment and more active listening and compassion. It's not hugging trees - although a breather close to nature is always a great idea!

The truth is that we may not consciously realize it, but environments can become extremely toxic when communication is not effective, compassionate, open and transparent.

This doesn't just apply to work. It applies to our personal lives, too, where we are our own leaders.

In relation to companies and teams, leaders end up playing a fundamental role in developing this active listening, as they are the ones the team relies on and looks to as an example.

Here let me quote a part of the book The 5 Team Challenges, by Patrick Lencioni, which I really like:

"Imagine a basketball coach in the locker room, at halftime of the game. He calls the team's center to talk privately in his office about the first half, then does the same with the point guard, the shooting guard, the wing and the wing -pivot, without any of them knowing what the others said. This is not a team. It is a collection of individuals."

In other words, it can be a leader with a spectacular technical CV, as well as a team with diverse skills and fantastic technical know-how. However, if they don't know how to communicate and act as a team, there will be no match won.

Team challenges

In general, the challenges for teams and leaders are not in the technical aspect. Quite the contrary, it's these behavioral skills that we often don't pay much attention to, but which end up eroding relationships and results day after day.

So, my suggestion is: pay attention to the changes. Know yourself and develop what is necessary to extract the maximum potential from organizations' greatest competitive advantage: people.
