However, we need to know how to make some cuts here. Being vulnerable will depend a lot on the environment and the openness of the people around you. Furthermore, it is worth emphasizing that not everyone will be able to be vulnerable all the time, allowing themselves to do so.

In other words, it is important that we consider class, race and gender aspects for the effectiveness of the approach and this discussion.

Vulnerability: Redefining Leadership

For moments when we can be vulnerable, vulnerability can redefine the steps of leaders, creating a bridge of connection with followers, through trust.

And vulnerability in leadership involves a willingness to be open and honest about failures, uncertainties, and challenges. This includes admitting mistakes, asking for help, and showing that, even in positions of authority, leaders are human and subject to failure.

This transparency not only humanizes leaders, but also creates a culture of trust and psychological safety among employees.

The advantages of vulnerability in leadership

The benefits of allowing yourself to be vulnerable are in the opposite direction of low performance - in case anyone has any doubts about that.

Quite the contrary, there is already data that more human leaders - and who, consequently, show their vulnerabilities - promote cohesion and high performance in their teams.

  1. Increased confidence: When leaders are transparent about their vulnerabilities, they establish an environment where team members feel safe to share their own concerns and ideas, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment;
  2. Strengthening relationships: Vulnerability enables a deeper connection between leaders and their teams. This connection is fundamental for employee engagement, as they feel valued and understood;
  3. Promoting innovation: An environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities encourages experimentation and innovation. So, employees feel encouraged to think outside the box and propose creative solutions without fear of reprisals.
  4. Improving organizational resilience: A leader's ability to show vulnerability in times of crisis can inspire the team to face challenges with more confidence and unity, strengthening the organization's resilience.

So there are advantages! But what about disadvantages?

Disadvantages only exist in organizations not open to transformation. And in this case, people with cultures of transparency and connection don't stay there long.

Implementing vulnerability in leadership

Obviously, none of this happens overnight. It involves many layers and parts in this whole process of opening up, allowing yourself and transforming, including therapies.

It also involves breaking cultural paradigms. For example, it is still customary to see vulnerability as weakness in different environments and societies.

That is, we have a big challenge ahead of us.

Still, some practices can help leaders who want to start on this journey.

  1. Admit mistakes: Acknowledging your own mistakes and learning from them is one of the most powerful ways to demonstrate vulnerability. This not only shows humility, but also teaches employees the importance of continuous learning.
  2. Seek feedback: Requesting honest, ongoing feedback and being open to constructive criticism builds trust and demonstrates a commitment to personal and organizational development.
  3. Share personal stories: reporting personal experiences, especially those related to challenges and overcoming, can inspire and motivate the team, in addition to humanizing the leader.
  4. Foster a supportive environment: create policies and practices that promote psychological safety, where employees feel comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns without fear of judgment or retaliation.

Authentic leadership, anchored in vulnerability, is an approach that can transform organizational dynamics.

By embracing vulnerability, leaders not only strengthen trust and cohesion within their teams, but also drive innovation and organizational resilience.
